CU Café began when a group of underrepresented graduate students and postdocs came together to discuss a general feeling of not belonging to their respective departments and the campus as a whole. We understood that building a sense of belonging occurs (in part) by the presences of role models within our given fields of study. Upon looking for role models at CU that “look like us,” we realized that this challenge would be harder than expected. Under the guidance of Andrea Stith, Loren Hough, and Mike Summers, we created a seminar series that aims to bring underrepresented faculty to CU to not only provide our underrepresented students and postdocs with role models but to increase the exposure of diverse faces on the campus as whole.
